Diet and Joint Health: An Often Underestimated Link

When we talk about joint health, we often think of genetics, age, or physical activity.

However, diet also plays an important role. It can influence inflammation, protect cartilage from oxidative stress, support harmonious growth in puppies, and help preserve mobility over the years.

Not all nutrients have the same level of evidence. To date, the strongest data concerns marine omega-3s EPA and DHA, vitamin E, and calcium/phosphorus balance during growth.

Omega-3s EPA and DHA: The Most Studied

Marine-derived omega-3s are currently the best-documented nutrients in the nutritional management of canine osteoarthritis.

Several clinical trials have shown that a sufficient intake of EPA and DHA can decrease pain, improve mobility, and reduce lameness in arthritic dogs.

These effects are explained by their ability to modulate the inflammatory response. By decreasing the production of certain inflammatory mediators, they help limit the inflammatory phenomena that maintain joint pain.

It is important to distinguish marine omega-3s from plant-based omega-3s. In dogs, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), found notably in certain vegetable oils, is very poorly converted into EPA and DHA. It therefore does not provide the same benefits.

Vitamin E: Protecting Cartilage from Oxidative Stress

Osteoarthritis is not solely the result of mechanical wear and tear.

Within the joint, chronic oxidative stress also contributes to cartilage degradation.

Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant and helps limit these phenomena. Several studies show that it reduces certain markers of oxidative stress and could contribute to improving joint comfort.

However, its level of evidence remains lower than that of omega-3s.

In Puppies, Calcium/Phosphorus Balance is Essential

During growth, especially in large breeds, the balance between calcium and phosphorus is crucial.

Contrary to popular belief, an excess of calcium does not strengthen the skeleton. On the contrary, it can disrupt its development and promote certain osteoarticular diseases.

Documented consequences include:

  • osteochondrosis;
  • certain dysplasias;
  • various growth disorders.

For this reason, a large breed puppy should receive a diet specifically formulated for growth, without calcium supplementation unless otherwise advised by a veterinarian.

Weight Remains the Most Important Nutritional Factor

Even with a quality diet, an overweight dog places more strain on its joints.

Weight control is therefore one of the most effective measures to slow the progression of osteoarthritis and preserve mobility.

In an arthritic dog, losing a few pounds can sometimes have a greater impact than some dietary supplements.

Is a Complete Food Sufficient?

A complete food normally covers the nutritional needs of a healthy dog.

However, in a dog suffering from osteoarthritis, the amounts of EPA and DHA present in a standard diet are often insufficient to achieve the effects observed in clinical studies.

Depending on the situation, a veterinarian may therefore recommend an enriched food or appropriate supplementation.
