A guide dog for the blind is not a "one-off" assistance dog. It is a partner for mobility, safety and independence, working daily for years. Its activity relies on constant vigilance, repeated journeys in urban environments, on hard and varied surfaces, and a very strong relationship of trust with its owner. This reality raises very concrete questions of selection, orthopedic health, working longevity and quality of life at retirement. The French context In France, the sector is structured around the French Federation of Guide Dog Associations for the Blind (FFAC), founded in 1972 and recognized as a public utility in 1981. It coordinates a national network composed of regional associations, training centers, and a breeding network. It also funds the professional training of guide dog trainers and instructors, and subsidizes CESECAH, a national breeding center that works with veterinary bodies on genetic selection and breeding protocols. The figures highlighted by the FFAC give an idea of the scale of the system: 222 guide dogs were placed in 2024 around 1,500 owner-dog teams are currently active in France €25,000 is the estimated cost of a guide dog (funded by public generosity). The historical link with the Lions Club movement is also worth noting. In 1925, Helen Keller called on the Lions to become the "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness". A few years later, Detroit Lions helped found Leader Dog in 1939, one of the historic guide dog schools. In France too, several guide dog associations were founded with the support of Lions Clubs or still maintain partnerships with them. The Toulouse association (we will return to its importance in France later) also states that it was created in 1995 on the initiative of Lions Clubs. Breeds Used In France, the most represented breeds in the guide dog movement are the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and crosses between these breeds. The FFAC explains that its breeders primarily select dogs between 50 and 70 cm at the shoulder, capable of learning quickly, adapting to new situations, and suiting very different owner profiles. The Labrador remains the reference breed; the FFAC even indicates that it accounts for approximately 90% of guide dogs placed in France. The St. Pierre (a cross between a Labrador and a Bernese Mountain Dog) exists among guide dogs in France, but within a specific framework. The FFAC lists it among guide dog profiles, while specifying that it is supported by the Frédéric Gaillanne Foundation, a structure specializing in guide dogs for visually impaired children and adolescents. In other words, it is not part of the most classic adult school circuit: this dog is mainly associated with a program designed for a younger audience, with specific needs for companionship, stability, and securing the pair. Puppies from the breeding network are placed at around 2 months of age with volunteer foster families, who ensure socialization, the first basics of obedience, and exposure to various environments. Around 12 months, the future guide dog enters training at a specialized center. The training phase generally lasts 6 to 10 months depending on the schools and profiles. The dog is then trained in real-life guiding, both in the city and in other contexts, before passing its guiding aptitude certificate. Some schools describe an evaluation involving some fifty exercises or work situations. Not all canine applications are successful. International literature shows that a significant proportion of initially selected dogs do not reach final placement, mainly for behavioral reasons, followed by health reasons. In an Australian study of 113 candidate dogs, approximately 49.6% were ultimately qualified. Other synthesis works on assistance dogs indicate that success rates can vary greatly depending on organizations and selection methods. After placement, the FFAC indicates that, on average, a guide dog's active life lasts 8 to 10 years. School follow-up is maintained throughout their career, and retirement is then prepared based on the dog's health, well-being, and the team's situation. In practice, the dog generally stays with its owner; otherwise, it can be welcomed by relatives or a volunteer family. Toulouse: A School that Also Trains Hearing Guide Dogs The Chiens Guides Grand Sud Ouest Association, based in Toulouse and affiliated with the FFAC, has developed since 2017 a program for hearing guide dogs for people with deafblindness, meaning a dual visual and auditory impairment. The association presents this project as a unique initiative in France. Why does this type of dog exist? Because a deafblind person does not just need a dog to guide them in space. They also need a dog capable of compensating for some of the loss of useful everyday auditory information. The hearing guide dog therefore has dual skills: it guides outdoors, it also knows how to identify certain sounds, such as a doorbell, an alarm clock, a telephone, an oven, or a fire alarm, and then alert its owner, often by nudging them with its nose. The Toulouse program also specifies that this training is based on a protocol developed with medical specialists, psychologists, and tactile French sign language interpreters. In other words, it's not just a "classic guide dog with an extra option." It's an adaptation of the dog's work to a dual sensory impairment, with specific issues of safety, autonomy, and communication. This is exactly why this program makes sense: it addresses a need that guiding alone does not fully cover. Health: The reference study on working longevity and causes of retirement is by Caron-Lormier et al., published in The Veterinary Journal in 2016, based on 7,686 guide dogs. The authors showed that 84% of dogs were able to work until retirement, with a career duration of approximately 8.5 years. The German Shepherd breed had a shorter operational lifespan than the other groups studied. In this cohort, musculoskeletal disorders were the most frequent cause of health-related withdrawal: 28% of withdrawals for health reasons, primarily due to osteoarthritis. This is a central point, because it is consistent both with the nature of the work required of guide dogs and with the breeds used. A guide dog travels for years on sidewalks, roadways, hard surfaces, stations, terminals, tiles, up and down, with daily repetitions. This is not an explosive effort like with some sports or intervention dogs; it is chronic wear and tear. Orthopedic selection therefore plays a major role. Breeding structures within the guide dog movement explain that they select their breeding stock based on physical criteria, including the absence of hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and ocular problems. This does not eliminate the risk, but it logically reduces the probability of producing dogs that will enter a long career already weakened. Skin conditions, particularly atopic dermatitis, also emerge as a significant issue. In Caron-Lormier's study, they are not the primary cause of withdrawal in terms of frequency, but they are associated with a marked reduction in career duration. Neurological and sensory disorders also count, notably epilepsy, which obviously compromises guiding ability for obvious safety reasons. Retirement: A transition to anticipate The retirement of a guide dog is not just the end of a service. It's a transition that needs to be managed emotionally, practically, and medically. Organizations emphasize that the decision is primarily based on the dog's needs, its health, and well-being. In France, the FFAC indicates that the dog generally stays with its owner, but this is not always the case. It can also be entrusted to relatives or a retirement family when staying with the owner is not the best solution. From a veterinary standpoint, one must be realistic: a former guide dog is often an older dog that has walked a lot, compensated a lot, and sometimes started to self-limit even before an osteoarthritis diagnosis was fully made. Weight management, exercise adaptation, pain assessment, locomotor follow-up, and the management of cutaneous or neurological comorbidities then become particularly important. This interpretation is consistent with what the literature shows regarding the reasons for guide dogs' career endings and, more broadly, the retirement of assistance animals. In conclusion The guide dog for the blind is not just a symbol of autonomy. It is a long-term working dog, subjected to repeated physical strain and very high behavioral demands. In France, the structuring of the sector around the FFAC, breeding, training centers, and team follow-up provides a solid framework. However, available scientific data clearly show one point: osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal disorders are the main bottleneck at the end of a career. In other words, the quality of a guide dog program is judged not only by the success of placements but also by the quality of initial selection, veterinary follow-up during the career, and support during retirement.
