The military dog is one of the most versatile operational partners for armed forces and specialized intervention units.

Behind the images of teams training or on operations lies a medical and behavioral reality that veterinary research is documenting with increasing precision.

These dogs work in extreme conditions, accumulate considerable physical stress, and can develop long-lasting behavioral impairments.

Their post-service health is a growing concern, of interest to both veterinarians and the care facilities that will accommodate these animals in retirement.


Breeds used and French context

The most frequently used breeds in the French armed forces and specialized units are the Belgian Malinois, the German Shepherd, and, to a lesser extent, the Labrador Retriever for certain olfactory detection missions.

The Malinois now largely dominates: agile, enduring, fast, with great learning abilities and strong work motivation, it represents approximately 75% of the canine population in the Gendarmerie Nationale.

In France, dogs are deployed in the army, the national gendarmerie, the national police, customs, RAID, and GIGN.

The latter two units are respectively a national police unit and a national gendarmerie unit, distinct from the armed forces stricto sensu but employing comparable protocols for the selection and training of their operational dogs.

The GIGN has a Canine Support Group (GAC) within its operational support section, composed mainly of Malinois.

The dogs are specialized in several disciplines:

  • assault,
  • explosive detection,
  • tracking
  • guidance.

They are selected for their calmness, speed, intelligence, and play motivation, the latter criterion being central to operational conditioning methods.

The typical service duration for a military or intervention dog varies according to sources between 7 and 10 years, before retirement from active service.


Training and physical constraints

The training of a military or intervention dog is a long process, generally starting from the first months of life for socialization and exposure to stimuli, and continuing for several years for operational specialization.

GIGN dogs undergo specialized training adapted to their missions, particularly in assault and explosive detection.

Training exposes them to very demanding environments, with high sensory and operational loads.

These repeated physical constraints have a documented biomechanical cost.

A study of 126 US Army Special Operations dogs (May 2021 – April 2023) shows that 49.2% of the dogs experienced at least one health event during the 24-month period, resulting in 4,130 lost service days.

Musculoskeletal injuries accounted for 35.6% of total unavailability days (1,472 days), ahead of neurological injuries (23%) and heatstroke (12.6%) (Knobbe et al., Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2024).

In working dogs, musculoskeletal injuries are among the major causes of unavailability and loss of operational capacity.

The most frequently described injuries include sprains, stress fractures, ligament ruptures, paw pad injuries, and phalangeal injuries (StatPearls/NCBI, 2023).

Heatstroke is a specific risk for dogs deployed with protective equipment, the wearing of which increases thermal stress, particularly in arid environments or during prolonged operations.


Post-service health: post-operational osteoarthritis

The cumulative joint stresses during their career, combined with repeated traumas, expose these dogs to a significant risk of clinical osteoarthritis at the time of or after retirement from service.

A study specifically focusing on police dogs referred for hip osteoarthritis documents this clinical reality in working dogs (Alves et al., BMC Veterinary Research, 2020).

The most frequently identified joint pathologies include osteoarthritis of the hips, elbows, and spine.

These conditions can begin subclinically during service and only become clinically manifest after operational retirement, sometimes quickly after the end of service.

The dog that appears to "age quickly" in retirement has often accumulated silent lesions during its working years.

Documented preventive measures include weight management, regular mobility monitoring, modification of activities to reduce joint stress, and the use of ramps to limit ascents and descents.

Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and glycosaminoglycans is mentioned in some recommendations (without dedicated clinical trials for working dogs).

Behavioral health: Canine Post-Traumatic Stress (C-PTSD)

This is the point that has most impacted military veterinary research over the last fifteen years.

Military dogs exposed to explosions, gunfire, violence, or other severe traumas can develop a behavioral syndrome documented as Canine Post-Traumatic Stress (C-PTS) or, in its chronic form, Canine Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD).

The concept of canine post-traumatic stress emerged in the context of American military dogs in the early 2010s, before being adopted in a dedicated clinical guideline by the Joint Trauma System.

The JTS distinguishes between the acute form (C-PTS) and the chronic form (C-PTSD), the latter having a less favorable prognosis for return to work if not treated early (Joint Trauma System Clinical Practice Guideline, August 2025).

Clinical signs of C-PTSD notably include:

  • increased or decreased reactivity to the environment,
  • changes in the relationship with the handler,
  • inability to perform previously validated operational tasks,
  • avoidance or escape behaviors,
  • general signs of anxiety or fear.

Presentation varies from one individual to another: some dogs become depressed and refuse to work, while others continue to work but become aggressive and difficult to manage.

Treatment relies on a combined approach:

  • anxiolytic medication (beta-blockers, gabapentin, clonidine),
  • avoidance of identified triggers,
  • environmental and social enrichment,
  • desensitization through progressive counter-conditioning. 

Early intervention significantly improves the chances of clinical stabilization and functional recovery.

It is important to note that C-PTSD is a behavioral diagnosis specific to the military context, based on documented exposure to trauma in an operational setting.

Its application to the civilian population is more complex and is debated within the veterinary community.


The retirement of military dogs: a welfare issue

In the United States, the adoption of retired dogs has been structured since Robby's Law (2000) and concerns approximately 300 dogs per year.

This evolution reflects a recognition of the operational dog's status beyond that of equipment.

The retirement of a military dog is not a trivial transition.

A dog that has worked 7 to 10 years in operations arrives in retirement with an often worsened physical condition: osteoarthritis, lingering injuries, sometimes unresolved C-PTSD.

The practicing veterinarian who cares for a former military or intervention dog must anticipate this particular health profile.

Points of vigilance in care include:

  • complete assessment of mobility and joint health,
  • thorough behavioral assessment to detect residual signs of post-traumatic stress,
  • adaptation of the living environment to limit identified triggering stimuli.

 

In conclusion

The military or intervention dog is a high-level athlete working in extreme conditions.

Available data clearly documents the long-term physical and behavioral consequences of this service: musculoskeletal injuries, post-operational osteoarthritis, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The care of these dogs after their retirement from service is an animal welfare issue that is beginning to be taken seriously by institutions and the veterinary community.

 

Understanding their journey means offering them a retirement worthy of what they have accomplished.
