Curcumin: Beware of Oversimplifications

Curcumin has become one of the most popular supplements for joint support. It is credited with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and sometimes even cartilage-protective properties. Some even present it as a natural alternative to veterinary anti-inflammatories.
The reality is (much) more nuanced.
Laboratory studies show that curcumin acts on several mechanisms involved in inflammation. However, this does not automatically mean that it improves the symptoms of a dog suffering from osteoarthritis. In medicine, a molecule can be very promising on cells or tissues, but then prove much less effective in living animals if it is poorly absorbed or rapidly eliminated by the body.
This is precisely curcumin's main problem.
What is curcumin?
Curcumin is the main active compound extracted from the rhizome of Curcuma longa.
Contrary to popular belief, scientific studies do not focus on turmeric used in cooking, but on concentrated and standardized extracts. The two products do not have the same composition or the same concentrations.
Another difficulty: curcumin is naturally poorly soluble in water and rapidly metabolized after ingestion. A large part of it is eliminated before reaching the tissues where it could exert an effect.
Why are researchers so interested in it?
In the laboratory, curcumin acts on several mechanisms involved in inflammation.
It can notably:
- modulate the NF-κB pathway;
- decrease the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6;
- limit the activity of certain enzymes involved in cartilage degradation;
- exhibit antioxidant activity.
These mechanisms explain why it generates so much interest.
However, they do not prove that supplementation actually improves the pain or mobility of an osteoarthritic dog. Most of these results come from laboratory studies or experimental models.
What the studies actually show
The systematic review by Barbeau-Grégoire et al. (2022), which covers 72 clinical trials, remains one of the references on nutraceuticals for osteoarthritic dogs.
Its conclusion is cautious: curcumin is not among the supplements whose effectiveness is best demonstrated.
This does not mean that it is ineffective, but simply that the evidence remains limited.
The study by Innes et al. (2003) is often highlighted. Researchers observed an improvement in certain objective criteria, but owners did not report a clear improvement in their dog's mobility.
In other words, results exist, but they are far from being as spectacular as some commercial claims suggest.
The same observation was made with Comblain et al. (2017). Dogs received a supplement combining curcumin, hydrolyzed collagen, and green tea extract. An improvement in pain upon manipulation was observed, but no significant improvement in locomotor performance. It is especially impossible to know what part of the benefit is actually attributable to curcumin, as several ingredients were combined.
The most recent reviews all come to the same conclusion: the available data remains scarce, highly variable between studies, and insufficient to establish solid recommendations.
Dosages
There is currently no recognized reference dose for curcumin in osteoarthritic dogs.
Commercial products use very different formulations, with sometimes incomparable quantities.
Therefore, comparing only the number of milligrams does not make much sense. A high dose of poorly absorbed curcumin may be less effective than a lower dose integrated into a formulation that improves its absorption.
However, this does not guarantee better clinical efficacy.
Forms and bioavailability: the real problem
The main obstacle to the use of curcumin is its low bioavailability.
After oral administration, it is poorly absorbed, rapidly transformed by the body, and then eliminated. The concentrations obtained are therefore often much lower than those used in laboratory studies.
To try and overcome this problem, many formulations have been developed: liposomes, micelles, nanoparticles, phospholipid complexes, or combinations with piperine. These technologies often improve absorption.
However, better absorption does not automatically mean better efficacy in an osteoarthritic dog. This is an important distinction, often overlooked in marketing arguments.
Marketing and scientific reality
Curcumin is a good example of the discrepancy that can exist between promising laboratory results and still limited clinical evidence.
Many manufacturers highlight its anti-inflammatory action to suggest widely proven efficacy against osteoarthritis. However, the available studies do not support such extensive claims.
Assertions such as "protects cartilage" or "as effective as an anti-inflammatory" are not supported by current scientific data in dogs.
To date, science mainly allows us to state three things:
- curcumin has a credible mechanism of action;
- it is generally well tolerated;
- a few studies report encouraging, but still modest, results.
However, nothing currently allows it to be considered one of the most effective supplements against canine osteoarthritis, nor as an alternative to treatments prescribed by a veterinarian.
For which dog?
Given current knowledge, curcumin should not be offered as a first-line treatment.
Osteoarthritis management primarily relies on a holistic approach: weight control, appropriate physical activity, pain management, veterinary follow-up, rehabilitation when indicated, and the use of treatments with better demonstrated efficacy.
Curcumin may eventually find its place as a supplement, particularly in a multimodal strategy, but it should not be presented as a miracle solution.
It does not replace pain medication or a veterinary consultation when a dog is in pain, limping, or losing mobility.
Interactions and precautions
Curcumin is generally well tolerated. The side effects observed are usually digestive and remain moderate.
This does not mean that it is suitable for all situations.
It can notably influence coagulation. Particular vigilance is therefore recommended in dogs receiving anticoagulant treatment or undergoing surgery.
Another important point: piperine, often added to improve curcumin absorption.
This molecule can alter the function of certain hepatic enzymes involved in the metabolism of many drugs. For a dog already receiving several treatments (anti-inflammatories, corticosteroids, certain antibiotics or antiparasitics), this combination should be reported to the veterinarian.
As a precaution, it is also preferable to avoid prolonged supplementation in growing puppies as well as in pregnant or lactating females. Some studies indeed suggest a possible effect of curcumin on iron metabolism, even if the data remains limited.
As with any food supplement, it is recommended to discuss it with your veterinarian, especially if the dog is already on medication or has a chronic illness.

Curcumin is a biologically interesting molecule, but its clinical efficacy in osteoarthritic dogs remains insufficiently demonstrated. Its main problem is its low bioavailability: in its classic form, it is poorly absorbed and rapidly eliminated by the body. Certain formulations improve its absorption, particularly when combined with piperine. However, this combination can also increase the risk of interactions with certain medications, as it alters the metabolism of several molecules at the hepatic level. For Canithermo Mobility, we therefore chose not to integrate an active ingredient whose benefit strongly depends on the formulation, actual absorption, and the dog's medical context. Our goal was to build a coherent formula, usable daily, with ingredients whose level of evidence, tolerance, and clarity seemed more suitable for a joint supplement intended for dogs. |
