The Golden Retriever is one of the most beloved dog breeds in the world. It is also one of the most studied breeds in terms of joint and cancer health. This is because its vulnerabilities are real and well-documented.

Hip dysplasia is particularly prevalent, far beyond what OFA statistics show.

And there is an aggravating factor specific to this breed, too little known to owners: the age at which a dog is spayed or neutered has a significant impact on the risk of developing serious joint pathologies and certain cancers.

Hip Dysplasia: The Real Figures 

OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) statistics report approximately 20% hip dysplasia in Golden Retrievers in their database.

However, in 2005, a major prospective study by Paster et al. (JAVMA) refuted this figure: out of 200 clinically normal Golden Retrievers evaluated without selection bias, the prevalence of hip dysplasia was between 53% and 73% depending on the evaluation method used.

The authors also showed that radiographs showing normal hips were 8.2 times more likely to be submitted to the OFA than dysplastic radiographs (which explains the massive discrepancy between official statistics and clinical reality).

This result does not mean that all dysplastic Goldens will be painful or disabled: dysplasia is a radiographic spectrum, and many dogs live long and comfortably with imperfect hips.

But it means that genetic predisposition is profound and that selecting parents based on hip scores does not guarantee a sound dog.

 

What This Changes in Practice 

Requiring hip scores (BVA or OFA) for both parents is still necessary but should not create a false sense of security.

The high prevalence in the breed suggests that regular monitoring and management of weight and activity are as important as health pedigree. 

 

 

Elbow Dysplasia and CCL

Elbow dysplasia affects approximately 10 to 12% of Golden Retrievers according to OFA data, with higher estimates (up to 21–25%) in British screening schemes (BVA/KC). The same under-reporting biases observed for hip dysplasia likely apply.

Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) rupture is also well-documented in the breed.

Work by Hart's team (UC Davis) on 759 Golden Retrievers showed that spaying/neutering significantly increases the risk of CCL rupture (especially in dogs operated before 12 months of age).

The physiological explanation: gonadal hormones influence the closure of bone growth plates.

Early spaying/neutering delays this closure, leaving limbs with a less stable joint architecture.

 

 

Early Spaying/Neutering: The Specific Impact on Golden Retrievers

Two studies published in PLoS ONE by Benjamin Hart's team (University of California Davis) have established solid data on this topic, and the results are striking...

 

On Joints 

In the intact (unspayed/unneutered) Golden Retriever population, 5% of dogs develop one or more joint disorders (hip dysplasia, CCL rupture, elbow dysplasia).

After spaying/neutering before 6 months of age, this rate increases to 4–5 times that of intact dogs (Torres de la Riva et al., 2013; Hart et al., 2014).

The effect is significantly more pronounced in Golden Retrievers than in Labradors in the same comparative study, suggesting a breed-specific vulnerability.

 

On Cancers (especially in females) 

In intact female Goldens, 3% developed one of the cancers tracked (lymphosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, mast cell tumor).

In females spayed at any age (including adulthood), this rate increased to 3–4 times that of intact females. This effect was specific to Goldens: the same study on Labradors did not find this signal for females.

In male Goldens, the effect of neutering on cancers was low. The signal is therefore primarily a female signal, specific to this breed, suggesting a particular vulnerability of female Goldens to hormonal disturbances related to gonadectomy.

 

What This Does NOT Mean 

These studies do not recommend against spaying/neutering!

They recommend considering the optimal age based on the breed.

For Golden Retrievers, Hart's team suggests waiting for skeletal maturity (after 12–18 months) rather than proceeding before 6 months.

This is a decision to discuss with your veterinarian, taking into account the environment, lifestyle, and risk of unwanted mating.

 

Prevention: What is Actionable 

Ask for hip AND elbow scores (OFA or BVA) of both parents (necessary but insufficient given the high prevalence in the breed).

Discuss spaying/neutering age with your veterinarian: available data suggests avoiding spaying/neutering before 12 months in Golden Retrievers.

Control weight: even without POMC predisposition, overweight exacerbates dysplasia and osteoarthritis.

Prioritize low-impact exercises during growth: no repeated jumping or sudden changes of direction before 12–18 months.

Monitor gait from 6–12 months: morning stiffness or reluctance to exercise are early signs.

Consider radiographic screening of hips and elbows at 12–18 months if parents are not certified.
