Siberian Husky: Endurance, Ocular Pathologies, and Real Needs

The Siberian Husky is one of the breeds frequently adopted for aesthetic reasons, although its real needs are often underestimated. Its spectacular appearance, piercing gaze, and cultural association with the great northern expanses make it a highly sought-after dog.
But the daily reality of a Siberian Husky is radically different from its image: it is an endurance dog, bred over centuries to run long distances in extreme conditions. It adapts poorly to an inactive lifestyle or an insufficiently secure and stimulating environment.
In terms of joints, the Siberian Husky has a notable particularity: it is among the breeds least affected by hip dysplasia, according to available screening data.
However, this breed presents specific and well-documented hereditary ocular pathologies, which justify ophthalmological monitoring and genetic testing before breeding.

Joint Health: A Breed Better Off Than Average
Hip Dysplasia: Documented Prevalence Among the Lowest
A retrospective study published in PLOS One (Moriceau et al., 2020, PMC7347163) evaluated the prevalence of hip dysplasia in 27,710 dogs of 10 breeds in France over the period 1997–2017. The overall prevalence ranged from 5% (Siberian Husky) to 51.9% (Cane Corso).
The Siberian Husky showed the lowest prevalence of all breeds included in this study.
This data is consistent with other sources. A publication by Priester and Mulvihill (J Am Vet Med Assoc, 1972, PMID 7459792) already identified the Siberian Husky among the least affected breeds, with a rate of about 5%, compared to up to 83% in the English Bulldog in the same cohort.
These figures reflect dogs voluntarily presented for screening, not the general population. They should therefore be interpreted with caution.
Nevertheless, the consistency of these results across different studies and periods suggests that the Siberian Husky is indeed a breed little affected by hip dysplasia compared to other breeds of similar size.

Joint Considerations in Sporting Huskies
For Huskies involved in sustained sporting activities (canicross, sledding, long-distance races), orthopedic monitoring may be relevant, especially in cases of lameness, decreased performance, or a history of joint problems.
Regular monitoring remains the best preventive approach for this category of dogs.
Hereditary Ocular Pathologies: The Main Point of Vigilance
Hereditary Cataract
Hereditary cataract is one of the main ocular conditions monitored in the Siberian Husky. It manifests as an opacification of the lens that can appear in the first years of life, distinct from age-related senile cataracts. According to data from the Siberian Husky Club of America on 1,345 Huskies examined (1999), 8% of dogs had hereditary cataracts. The genetic basis of this form is still under study.
X-linked Progressive Retinal Atrophy (XLPRA)
The Siberian Husky is one of the breeds where progressive retinal atrophy is inherited in an X-linked manner (XLPRA). This form was first described in Huskies by Acland et al. (American Journal of Medical Genetics, 1994, PMID 7977457). It is caused by a mutation in the RPGR gene.
Hemizygous males are more severely affected, with degeneration of the rods followed by the cones, leading to blindness. Heterozygous females are carriers and may show partial lesions, varying according to random X-chromosome inactivation. Genetic tests have been developed for this mutation and are offered by several specialized veterinary laboratories.
Corneal Dystrophy
Corneal dystrophy manifests as an accumulation of lipids in the cornea, causing opacity. It is relatively common in Siberian Huskies (3% of dogs examined in the SHCA cohort). It rarely affects vision significantly but requires regular ophthalmological monitoring.
Recommended Monitoring
Due to the prevalence of these ocular conditions, regular ophthalmological examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist is a relevant monitoring measure for this breed. In breeding, screening breeding dogs for hereditary cataracts and XLPRA is good health practice.
The Real Needs of the Siberian Husky
An Endurance Dog, Not a Sprinter
The Siberian Husky was bred to cover long distances at a moderate, sustained pace. A long walk or an adapted canicross session suits them better than intense, short play sessions. Chronic under-stimulation results in destructive behaviors, significant vocalization, and anxiety.
Escaping: A Breed Instinct
The Husky is genetically programmed to cover territory. Its running instinct is deeply ingrained. An unsecured garden, an open door, or a dropped leash are all risky situations. This is not an educational problem correctable by training alone: it is a breed characteristic that the owner must manage structurally.
Thermoregulation: A Practical Point of Vigilance
The Husky has a dense double coat adapted to Nordic conditions. Intense exercise in high temperatures should be avoided due to the risk of heatstroke, which is particularly pronounced in Nordic breeds. Regarding clipping, the recommendation to keep the coat is generally shared by veterinarians and breed clubs due to the thermoregulatory role of the coat, even if it is more of a practical consensus than formalized scientific literature on this specific breed.
