Labrador Retriever: Genetic Predisposition to Gluttony

The Labrador Retriever has such a friendly reputation that it sometimes overshadows the essentials.
They are described as kind, easy-going, playful, gluttonous, and always up for anything. All of this is true. But for them, gluttony is not just a joke among owners. It can have a real biological basis.

The work of Raffan and his team has shown that a significant proportion of Labradors carry a POMC gene deletion associated with increased hunger, heightened food motivation, and, more recently, a lower resting energy expenditure.

In other words: for some Labradors, eating more isn't just about training. It's also a matter of genetics. 

This article therefore serves neither to excuse all overweight, nor to blame owners. It serves to put the Labrador in its rightful place: a remarkable, highly trainable, very sociable retriever, but with real points of vigilance, particularly regarding weight, joints, and certain breed-specific ailments.

Origin and standard

The Labrador Retriever is a British breed, although its ancestors historically came from the coasts of Newfoundland. Later bred in Great Britain, it was developed as a game retriever, with a love for water, a soft mouth, endurance, and a strong willingness to cooperate with humans.

The FCI standard No. 122 currently in force dates from June 16, 2022, and the French version published by the FCI dates from March 3, 2023. It describes a powerfully built dog, with a short loin, very active, with a friendly nature, without aggression, and a marked passion for water.

Interestingly, the standard explicitly excludes dogs with excessive weight or build. This point is often overlooked despite being central to the breed. 


Daily temperament

The Labrador is a highly sociable dog. They love humans, interactions, activity, outings, games, and movement. They often have good tolerance for contact, little distrust, and a genuine desire to cooperate.

But this pleasant profile should not lead one to believe that it is a "simple" dog by default. A young Labrador is often exuberant, intrusive, intense, and immature for a long time. Many remain very adolescent in their behavior until 3 or 4 years of age.

Their relationship with food is also central to their daily life. They notice everything. They anticipate everything. They search, they look, they solicit. In some individuals, this behavior is largely reinforced by their biology.

This changes how the dog is judged: it's not just a poorly behaved glutton, but sometimes a dog that is structurally more vulnerable to hunger and overweight.


Owner profile

The Labrador is well-suited for someone who:

  • can provide real physical and mental expenditure,
  • is capable of being strict about meals,
  • does not constantly give in to begging,
  • wants a highly social and highly involved dog,
  • accepts that a kind dog still requires a solid framework.

It is not suitable for someone who

  • leaves food lying around
  • wants an “easy dog without effort”
  • does not have the availability for a very present and opportunistic retriever when it comes to food.

 

Family life and cohabitation

The Labrador often thrives in a family setting. They generally cohabitate well with children, other dogs, and sometimes cats if introductions are done correctly.

But here too, nuances must be added. With young children, their size, joy, and unintentional boisterousness require real supervision. With other animals, their energy can be too much. And in a household where everyone snacks, leaves food lying around, or gives out leftovers, a Labrador can quickly become obsessive.

In this breed, food-related education must be maintained by the entire household, not just one person.

 

Physical and mental needs

The Labrador is a working breed. Taking them out for fifteen minutes is not enough to keep them balanced.

What suits them best are activities related to their selection:

  • retrieving,
  • scenting,
  • searching,
  • water activities,
  • tracking,
  • useful obedience exercises,
  • structured learning.

Physical activity also plays a direct health role in them, as it helps prevent overweight, which then aggravates joint problems. However, exercise does not replace dietary control. A Labrador does not always "compensate" for their excesses just because they move a lot.

 

Growth

Labradors have a long growth period. As with other large to heavy breeds, growth plates remain vulnerable for a long time, and early mechanical stress can promote or worsen a fragile joint condition.

Limit during growth:

  • repeated jumps,
  • intensive stair climbing,
  • jogging on hard surfaces,
  • impact exercises too early.

Monitor very closely:

  • body condition,
  • growth rate,
  • actual quantity of treats,
  • hidden intake given by family and friends.

For Labradors, "he's always hungry" is not a good criterion for automatically increasing the ration.

 

Health: documented pathologies and vigilance points


POMC mutation: hunger is not always a matter of upbringing

This is the most specific point of the breed. In 2016, Raffan et al. identified a 14 base pair deletion in the POMC gene in Labradors, associated with higher body weight, increased adiposity, and significantly greater food motivation. This deletion was not found in most other breeds tested in this study.

In 2024, the same team clarified the mechanism: carrier dogs not only experience more hunger between meals but also exhibit a lower resting energy expenditure.

In short: for some Labradors, the problem is twofold. They want to eat more, and their bodies burn less at rest. 

This obviously does not preclude rigorous management. But it changes the way we talk about weight in this breed.

 

Hip and elbow dysplasia

The Labrador is a breed classically affected by hip dysplasia, which has been well-documented for a long time. Studies by Bonnett et al. showed a historically significant prevalence in a colony followed for several decades, with improvement through selection. Other studies, such as those by Woolliams, Wang, Denny, or Van Ryssen, confirm the importance of the subject in the breed or in retrievers.

The useful point for the reader is simple: in Labradors, poorly managed weight and growth exacerbate an already existing risk. Orthopedics is not just about genes. It's also about what's in the food bowl.

Exercise-Induced Collapse (EIC)

EIC is an autosomal recessive neuromuscular condition particularly well-known in Labrador Retrievers. Patterson et al. identified a mutation in the DNM1 gene strongly associated with the syndrome. Affected dogs are normal at rest, but can experience progressive weakness, incoordination, and then collapse during intense and exciting exercise.

The work of Minor et al. showed a significant frequency of carriers and affected individuals depending on the bloodlines. DNA testing exists. This is therefore a serious breeding issue, not an academic curiosity.

 

Other vulnerabilities to be aware of

The Labrador is also overrepresented for several common problems:

  • external otitis, favored by floppy ears and a love of water;
  • overweight and obesity, with a global impact on health;
  • lipomas, more frequent in overweight individuals;
  • certain secondary joint conditions favored by weight.

Epidemiological analyses by Pegram et al. suggest a breed profile that is both very popular and robust in some aspects, but clearly vulnerable in others.


What this concretely changes

If you are looking for a Labrador Retriever, you should ask for:

  • the parents' hip and elbow scores,
  • the EIC DNA test,
  • relevant ophthalmological examinations,
  • honest information on weight, bloodlines, and breed management,
  • ideally the POMC status if the breeder tests for it, even if it is not yet systematic everywhere.

And daily, you need to:

  • accurately weigh portions,
  • count treats,
  • prevent free access to food,
  • ensure the same rules are applied by the entire family,
  • monitor weight throughout life, not just at vaccination visits.

 

Care

The Labrador is easier to care for than a Golden, but still requires attention.

The short, dense coat sheds a lot, especially during shedding periods. The ears require particular vigilance, especially in swimming dogs. Nails, teeth, and body condition must be regularly monitored.

The number one care point for them remains diet. This is where many Labradors determine their future health.

 

True cost

A Labrador may seem "simpler" than a long-haired or very fragile dog, but its true cost can quickly escalate if weight or orthopedic issues arise.

The cost includes:

  • properly portioned food,
  • prevention and veterinary follow-up,
  • possible joint examinations,
  • activities and training,
  • sometimes health insurance,
  • and, in case of dysplasia or weight-related complications, heavy expenses.

The trap with the Labrador is that it seems easy before becoming costly.

 

Legal framework

The Labrador Retriever is not covered by French legislation on categorized dogs. The obligations are those of any dog owner: identification, usual health regulations, and rabies vaccination for certain travel outside mainland France. The FCI standard classifies it as a Group 8 retriever with a working trial.

 

Choosing a breeder

A reputable Labrador breeder should be able to provide:

  • hip and elbow scores,
  • EIC status,
  • ophthalmological examinations,
  • a genuine breeding philosophy,
  • and clear communication on weight and temperament.

Regarding dilute colors such as silver, champagne or charcoal, they are not recognized by the current FCI standard.

A good breeder doesn't just sell a "cute and greedy" puppy. They also explain the discipline required by this breed.

 

Who is this dog suitable for?

Yes, rather, if you:

  • are looking for a sociable, cooperative, and trainable dog,
  • can ensure regular activity,
  • are willing to strictly manage food,
  • have a consistent family environment,
  • accept that a kind dog needs a lot of discipline.

No, rather, if you:

  • leave food accessible,
  • are looking for a self-regulating dog,
  • are absent for long hours without a solution,
  • don't want to constantly think about weight,
  • expect a Labrador to almost train itself.

 

Thermotherapy 

For a Labrador exhibiting stiffness, osteoarthritis, or stabilized dysplasia, gentle heat can be incorporated into a comfort regimen. It does not replace veterinary follow-up, weight management, or adapted activity. However, in a breed where overweight quickly increases joint load, any approach to locomotor comfort must be considered with this context in mind.
