Cani-MTB and Cani-Hiking

Cani-MTB and cani-hiking are two very different disciplines.
The first combines speed, traction, bicycle inertia, and rapid changes in trajectory. The second is more focused on endurance, duration, elevation gain, and uneven terrain.
Injuries specific to these disciplines are poorly documented in veterinary literature. There is one retrospective study on canicross injuries, but no solid equivalent specifically on cani-MTB or cani-hiking.
The analysis is therefore based on data available from similar disciplines, veterinary sports medicine, exercise physiology, and the mechanical constraints inherent to these activities.
Cani-MTB: speed, traction, and inertia
Cani-MTB, or bikejoring, follows the principle of canicross traction but with a bicycle.
This change significantly alters the dynamics of the effort.
Speed is higher, inertia is greater, and incidents can become more difficult to correct.
A publication dedicated to Greysters trained in bikejoring reports peak speeds close to 42 km/h, which gives an idea of the possible level of strain in this discipline.
Even in the absence of dedicated injury studies, several points of vigilance clearly emerge.
The Surface
The combination of speed, traction, and a hard surface increases repetitive stress on the musculoskeletal system.
Asphalt also poses a thermal risk to paw pads when hot.
Paw pad injuries are well-described in dogs, even if they are not specific to cani-MTB.
The most suitable surfaces remain soft paths, regular tracks, clean trails, and non-abrasive terrains.
Long stretches of asphalt should be avoided.
Heat
Sporting dogs are exposed to the risk of hyperthermia, especially during intense exercise.
Veterinary reviews on heatstroke remind us that exercise can trigger severe hyperthermia when heat dissipation becomes insufficient.
A motivated dog can continue to run even when its body temperature is already rising too much.
Warning signs should lead to immediate cessation of effort:
- very pronounced panting;
- disorganized gait;
- unusual slowing down;
- weakness;
- hypersalivation;
- altered alertness;
- tremors;
- refusal to move forward.
Equipment
Cani-MTB requires appropriate equipment.
The harness must be designed for traction, allow good shoulder freedom, and not impede breathing.
Improvised systems increase the risk of incidents, especially with speed and line tension.
The equipment must also help limit jolts and maintain the most stable trajectory possible.
Starting Age
There is no universal age threshold that allows cani-MTB for all dogs.
Osteoarticular maturity depends on the size, breed, and individual dog.
Sustained traction efforts should be avoided before the end of growth.
A gentle technical initiation can be offered earlier, without intense traction or high volume, but structured work should wait for locomotor maturity.
For dogs at orthopedic risk, veterinary approval is preferable before starting regular activity.
Cani-Hiking: Endurance, Terrain, and Duration
Cani-hiking presents a different stress profile.
Speed is generally lower, but the effort can last a long time and the terrain varies more.
The main risk factors are:
- excessive duration;
- elevation changes;
- long descents;
- abrasive soils;
- roots, stones, mud, or slopes;
- lack of physical preparation.
The stresses are often less explosive than in cani-MTB, but they can accumulate over several hours.
Paw pads, toes, shoulders, back, and hips can be subjected to prolonged strain.
The most frequent case remains the unprepared dog taken on a hike that is too long because it seems motivated.
Enthusiasm does not replace conditioning.
Warm-up and Cool-down
Warm-up and cool-down are classic principles of canine sports medicine.
The goal is not to turn every outing into a complex protocol, but to avoid an abrupt start to sustained effort.
A few minutes of active walking before the activity allows for a gradual warm-up.
After exertion, a cool-down facilitates observation of gait and recovery.
Paw Pads and Extremities
Paw pads should be checked after each long or fast outing.
Look for:
- abrasion;
- fissure;
- burn;
- wound;
- overheating;
- foreign body;
- irritation between the toes;
- abnormal wear.
Paw pad lesions are common in distal canine trauma.
They may seem minor at first, but can become very bothersome if activity continues.
Hydration
Access to water is essential during long outings or in mild to hot weather.
The dog must be able to drink regularly, without waiting for signs of fatigue to appear.
Dehydration and hyperthermia can quickly compromise the safety of the effort.
It is also important to avoid prolonged exercise during hot hours, especially for untrained, brachycephalic, elderly, overweight, or heat-sensitive dogs.
Progressiveness
In both cani-MTB and cani-hiking, progression should focus on only one parameter at a time:
- distance;
- duration;
- speed;
- elevation gain;
- terrain difficulty;
- frequency of outings.
Increasing several parameters simultaneously increases the risk of overexertion.
Unusual stiffness, slower recovery, lameness, decreased enthusiasm, or a change in behavior after activity should lead to reducing the load.
