Canicross: running with your dog

Canicross involves a runner and a dog connected by a bungee line. The dog wears a pulling harness, while the runner uses a suitable belt.

Initially developed as off-snow training for sled dogs, canicross has become a sport in its own right with its own competitions, rules, and dedicated circuits.

Unlike disciplines such as agility or frisbee, canicross is primarily based on endurance effort. The dog runs on varied terrains for sometimes significant durations, with repeated stresses rather than violent impacts or jump landings.

The issues encountered are more related to paw pads, equipment, effort management, recovery, or overuse injuries.

 

 

What the literature shows

Scientific data on canicross remains limited.

The study by Lafuente and collaborators, published in 2018, is currently the main publication specifically dedicated to injuries observed in this discipline.

Among the 160 dogs included in the survey, 21.9% had presented at least one injury at the time of data collection.

The most frequent injuries concerned:

  • wounds;
  • abrasions;
  • paw pad injuries.

The majority of dogs recovered completely.

However, this study remains a retrospective survey based on owner reports. It provides useful information but does not allow for an exhaustive mapping of canicross injuries.

Otherwise, knowledge comes mainly from veterinary sports medicine and research on canine athletes.

 

 

Paw pads: the primary exposed area

Paw pads are among the most stressed structures.

Abrasive terrains, stony paths, long distances, or hard surfaces can lead to:

  • abrasions;
  • fissures;
  • overheating;
  • small wounds;
  • plantar pain.

The front limbs appear to be particularly affected.

In hot weather, surface temperature is an additional factor. The AAHA reminds that some surfaces exposed to the sun can reach temperatures sufficient to cause burns.

Monitoring paw pads after outings remains one of the most useful practices.

 

 

Overuse injuries

Canicross rarely causes a spectacular injury.

Stresses often appear gradually.

Shoulders, lumbar muscles, spine, and hind limbs can undergo repeated stress for weeks or months.

Slight stiffness, slower recovery, or decreased engagement can precede actual lameness.

These overuse injuries are sometimes difficult to detect because the dog remains motivated and continues to run despite discomfort.

 

 

Equipment

The harness is a central element of the practice.

It must be designed for pulling, adapted to the dog's morphology, and correctly adjusted.

A poorly fitted harness can:

  • limit shoulder range of motion;
  • create chafing;
  • alter posture;
  • distribute forces unfavorably.

Studies on harnesses show that some models can modify the range of motion of the front limbs, particularly at the shoulder. "Restrictive" harnesses, which pass horizontally across the front of the chest or block the point of the shoulder, are therefore not well suited for pulling sports.

For canicross, a pulling harness is generally preferred, designed to distribute the effort over the chest and torso, without neck compression and without hindering shoulder movement.

Classic walking harnesses, anti-pull harnesses, harnesses that are too short, too rigid, or poorly adjusted are not designed for prolonged pulling work.

The adjustment of the leash, the runner's belt, and the harness also contribute to comfort and safety.

 

 

At what age to start?

Structured pulling work should not begin before osteoarticular maturity.

This maturity varies with size and breed.

Large dogs generally finish their growth later than small dogs.

A range of 12 to 18 months is often suggested, sometimes more for certain breeds.

Before this period, the young dog can learn:

  • directions;
  • the relationship with the handler;
  • vocal commands;
  • environmental management.

Learning does not require actual pulling work.

 

 

Warm-up and recovery

Veterinary sports medicine recommendations place significant importance on warm-up.

A few minutes of walking or light trotting allow for a gradual increase in muscle temperature and joint mobility.

Cool-down is also beneficial.

A walking phase after exercise facilitates recovery and allows for observation of the dog's behavior.

Distance, frequency of outings, elevation, and terrain difficulty should progress gradually.

Increasing several parameters simultaneously increases the risk of overexertion.

 

 

Warning signs

Several signs deserve particular attention:

  • stiffness upon waking after an outing;
  • paw pad sensitivity;
  • change in posture in harness;
  • decreased motivation;
  • shortened stride;
  • difficulty starting;
  • lameness, even slight.

A very motivated dog may continue to run despite initial pain.

The desire to pull does not guarantee the absence of a problem.

 

 

Dysplasia, arthritis, and canicross

Canicross is not a treatment for dysplasia or arthritis.

However, some dogs with mild and stabilized conditions may engage in moderate endurance activity as part of a comprehensive management plan.

This decision falls under an individual veterinary evaluation.

A dog with mild dysplasia or early arthritis should not be directed towards canicross without a prior assessment.

 

 

Conclusion

Canicross can be a particularly interesting physical activity when adapted to the dog.

Scientific data are still limited, but several elements appear important:

  • wait for physical maturity;
  • use appropriate equipment;
  • monitor paw pads;
  • gradually manage workload;
  • integrate warm-up and cool-down.

As in most endurance sports, repeated stresses probably play a more significant role than isolated effort.
