Main Dog Protection Sports

Dog protection sports demand power, control, emotional stability, and recovery.
French Ring, Mondioring, Belgian Ring, or IGP are not just "bite work" disciplines. They are complete sports that challenge the dog on several levels: acceleration, jumps, braking, grips, obedience under stimulation, and calming down.
Specific veterinary literature on French Ring and Mondioring remains limited. However, available data on working dogs, police dogs, and comparable disciplines allow us to identify several points of vigilance: musculoskeletal injuries, insufficient orthopedic screening, high mental load, and the importance of recovery.
This article does not aim to question these disciplines. It aims to emphasize that the more demanding the activity, the more structured the dog's monitoring must be.
French Ring
French Ring combines obedience exercises, jumps, and sport bite work on a decoy wearing a protective suit.
The exercises are standardized, scored according to a precise scale, and divided into several progression levels.
Dog control, the quality of exercises, and precision of work are as important as physical abilities.
Mondioring
Mondioring is based on the same main principles: obedience, jumps, and bite work.
The particularity of the discipline lies in its variable scenario setups. The decors, distractions, objects used, and organization of exercises change from one competition to another.
The dog must adapt to new environments while maintaining its stability and working capacity.
Belgian Ring
Belgian Ring is a historical discipline that maintains a more utilitarian approach.
Exercises also include bite work, physical exercises, and scenario setups that are sometimes less standardized than in French Ring.
The discipline retains a strong functional component and requires significant physical capabilities.
IGP
IGP is based on three distinct phases:
- tracking;
- obedience;
- protection.
Scent work plays an important role, which distinguishes this discipline from ring sports.
These different disciplines are now largely dominated by the Belgian Malinois, German Shepherd, and Dutch Shepherd, although other breeds can also participate.
Scientific literature specifically devoted to French Ring or Mondioring remains very limited. Available data mainly comes from working dogs, police dogs, and dogs participating in comparable activities.
Frequency of injuries in working dogs
The survey published by Spinella et al. among 109 active working dogs reports an injury incidence of 45.5%.
The observed injuries primarily concerned the musculoskeletal system.
In this population:
- 36.4% of dogs had undergone a sports medicine examination;
- 55.5% had an orthopedic examination;
- radiographic screening for hips and elbows was not systematic.
These dogs were involved in search and rescue or certain working disciplines, but their physical demands have several common points with protection sports.
Alves' study on police dogs also confirms the frequency of orthopedic problems in these active populations.
The Belgian Malinois in protection sports
The Malinois now holds a dominant position in protection disciplines.
Its speed, acceleration capacity, willingness to work, and commitment largely explain this situation.
However, working dog populations show that this breed is not immune to locomotor disorders.
In Alves' study on police dogs with bilateral hip osteoarthritis, Malinois represented a significant portion of the affected dogs.
German Shepherds, Labradors, and Dutch Shepherds were also represented.
Dysplasia and osteoarthritis therefore also affect working and sport dogs, including those with the best performance.
A dog that starts an intensive activity around two years old and continues its career for several years accumulates significant mechanical stress.
Biomechanical constraints of protection sports
Regulations and exercise analysis make it possible to identify several particularly stressed areas.
Bite work
The impact during the bite of the suit transmits stress to the cervical region, shoulders, and spine.
Accelerations and decelerations further increase these stresses.
Jumps
Hurdle, long jump, or palisade exercises expose the dog to significant forces upon landing.
The shoulders, forelimbs, lumbar region, and iliopsoas are among the most stressed areas.
Explosive efforts
Protection disciplines alternate periods of calm with phases of maximum activity.
This effort profile heavily stresses muscular, tendinous, and articular structures.
Cumulative load
A high-level competition can involve many exercises over an extended period.
Physical fatigue and mental fatigue then gradually accumulate.
Behavioral recovery and mental load
Protection sports challenge both physical abilities and behavioral control abilities.
A correctly selected, prepared, and trained dog can perfectly thrive in this type of activity.
Conversely, certain situations should draw attention:
- persistent agitation;
- difficulty recovering;
- sleep disturbances;
- decreased appetite;
- loss of motivation;
- decreased performance.
These signs are not specific to protection disciplines, but they may warrant a veterinary or behavioral evaluation.
Prevention and follow-up
Available data show that preventive follow-up remains insufficient in certain populations of active dogs.
Recommendations usually proposed in veterinary sports medicine include:
- an orthopedic examination before starting intense activity;
- radiographic screening adapted to the breed;
- a warm-up before sessions;
- regular monitoring throughout the sports career;
- monitoring of recovery.
The first signs of pain may remain discreet:
- slight stiffness;
- behavioral change during equipping;
- decreased performance;
- modification of the bite of the suit;
- slower recovery.
Conclusion
Protection sports impose significant locomotor and mental constraints on dogs.
Specific literature on French Ring and Mondioring remains limited, but studies on working dogs show a high frequency of musculoskeletal injuries.
The Malinois, despite its athletic qualities, is not protected against orthopedic conditions or osteoarthritis.
Screening, physical preparation, recovery, and veterinary follow-up are currently the main prevention tools.
