The Whippet is a frequently misunderstood dog. Some see it as nothing more than a small, nervous, cold sprinter, solely focused on pure speed. Others reduce it to a refined, calm, almost unsubstantial couch dog. Both views are incomplete...

The Whippet is an English sighthound built for speed, indeed, but it is also a very sensitive dog, deeply attached to its living environment, capable of great gentleness and a true quality of relationship.

Its health profile also deserves more serious consideration than is often given, particularly regarding its heart.

The Whippet is a British breed recognized by the FCI under standard n°162, classified in Group 10, Section 3, short-haired sighthounds, without working trial. The standard describes it as a balanced combination of muscular power and strength with elegance and grace of lines, built for speed and work, with any form of exaggeration to be avoided.

Official sizes are 47 to 51 cm at the shoulder for males and 44 to 47 cm for females.

The coat is fine, short, and close in texture. All colors and color combinations are allowed, except merle.

The Whippet is not a fragile dog in the stereotypical sense. It is a lean, athletic, physiologically unique dog that primarily requires proper understanding.

 

Origin and Standard

The FCI standard specifies that the Whippet originates from Great Britain. It was bred as a speed and working sighthound, with a build made for running.

Its history is generally linked to crosses between small Greyhounds and terriers in the 19th century, although the exact origins are still debated.

The French Whippet Club continues to value both conformity to the standard and aptitude for work and racing, which is consistent with the breed's history. 


Daily Temperament

The FCI standard describes the Whippet as an ideal companion, highly adaptable to domestic and sporting life, gentle, affectionate, and even-tempered.

The Whippet is often more tender, more sensitive, and more emotionally involved than one might imagine. It dislikes harshness, tolerates heavy emotional climates poorly, and thrives in a calm, peaceful, and respectful environment.

However, it is not a dog without character. It can be reserved, very attached to its routines, sometimes impressionable, but it is not distant when it feels secure. 


Ideal Owner Profile

The Whippet suits a gentle, consistent, attentive owner, capable of providing both domestic comfort, periods of rest, and genuine phases of activity. 

The ideal owner understands that a sighthound is not a "passive" dog just because it sleeps a lot at home. They also know that the Whippet's sensitivity necessitates gentle training, not a power struggle.

 

Family Life and Cohabitation

The Whippet can be excellent in a family. Its relationship with children is often good, provided they respect its space and sensitivity. It generally cohabits well with other dogs. However, like many sighthounds, it often retains a strong propensity to chase small moving animals.

Cohabitation with cats and small animals therefore depends heavily on the individual, bloodlines, and the quality of early training.

 

Physical and Mental Needs

The Whippet needs daily exercise, with real opportunities to run freely in perfectly secure spaces. It is built for speed and brief efforts, but many well-conditioned individuals also tolerate moderate and regular activity very well.

What needs to be understood is that the Whippet needs a well-managed alternation between activity and recovery. Indoors, it can be remarkably calm. Outdoors, it can become a true runner in a second. Its prey drive is not theoretical. It is real and must be taken into account.

 

Growth

The Whippet is a fast dog, but that doesn't mean it should be treated like a miniature adult early on. Its growth must be properly managed, with attention to musculature, support, coordination, and the overall quality of its development.


Health

Myxomatous Mitral Valve Degeneration (MVD)

This is the most well-documented health issue in the breed. Stepien's 2017 study on 200 North American Whippets showed a very high frequency of systolic murmurs on auscultation, even in seemingly healthy dogs. The main interest of this study is to remind us that auscultation is not always enough: in Whippets, a murmur can be functional or related to true mitral regurgitation, and Doppler echocardiography is often necessary to differentiate. 

A genetic study published in 2015 also identified loci associated with MVD severity in Whippets, supporting the idea of a hereditary component in the breed. 


Bully Whippet Syndrome

Bully Whippet corresponds to a mutation in the MSTN gene, which codes for myostatin. Mosher's 2007 study showed that a two-base pair deletion in exon 3 of the gene leads to a severe hypermuscular phenotype in homozygotes. Heterozygotes, on the other hand, often have slightly more developed musculature without a dramatic phenotype. This is a very important genetic point for breeding, as it allows breeders to avoid the birth of affected homozygous puppies through informed reproductive choices. 

 

Phosphofructokinase (PFK) Deficiency

Hereditary phosphofructokinase deficiency has been documented in Whippets in a 2009 article describing two males with hemolytic anemia, exercise myopathy, and progressive cardiac involvement. This remains a rare but real condition in the breed. It is important to be aware of it, particularly for breeders and veterinarians facing compatible symptoms of exercise intolerance, hemolysis, or pigmenturia. 

 

Anesthetic Vigilance

Like sighthounds in general, the Whippet deserves particular anesthetic vigilance. The classic literature on sighthound anesthesia concerns the sighthound group, not just the Whippet. So, we can speak of group caution, not a breed-specific pathology. The important thing in practice is to always inform the veterinarian of the breed and its physiological type before anesthesia or sedation. 

 

What this changes concretely / prevention

Concretely, this means three things.

First, any murmur detected in a Whippet deserves serious investigation, often by echocardiography.

Second, in breeding, managing the MSTN mutation makes sense to avoid affected homozygotes. 

Finally, suggestive signs of PFK deficiency, even if rare, should not be dismissed in a dog of this breed presenting exercise intolerance, anemia, or abnormal muscle episodes.

 

Maintenance

The Whippet is simple to maintain in terms of coat, but not in terms of thermal comfort. Its short coat and low fat coverage make it poorly protected against the cold. This has a direct impact on its daily comfort and sometimes on its muscle recovery after exercise. It is not a dog meant to live outdoors or to take low temperatures lightly!

 

Real Cost

The true cost of a Whippet is not limited to its food or its apparent ease of maintenance.

It requires a secure environment, genuine veterinary follow-up, possibly cardiac examinations, and equipment adapted for cold weather. Its hidden cost is not grooming, but managing its lifestyle.

Legal Framework

The Whippet is not classified as a dangerous dog under French legislation. It remains subject to the general obligations applicable to all dogs. The real issue is not legal, but rather the quality of its living environment, the safety of its outings, and an understanding of its sighthound profile.


Choosing a Breeder

A good Whippet breeder should be able to speak clearly about temperament, work, racing, heart conditions, and genetic issues truly known in the breed.

If the breeder only talks about elegance, refinement, and lounging on the sofa, they are missing an important part of what a Whippet is.

The French Whippet Club explicitly emphasizes the joint importance of conformity to the standard and sporting abilities in its rating system.

Who it is / isn't suitable for

A Whippet is for you if you like slender, gentle, sensitive dogs, capable of speed but also calm, and if you can provide security, comfort, and well-managed activity.

A Whippet is not for you if you are looking for a dog that is robust in the cold, very independent, or if you completely underestimate its prey drive and sensitivity.
